Key Achievements
Initial stage (1988- 1992)
- INSEC founders were actively involved in the movement for restoration of democracy and human rights in 1990
- Contributory role in the formulation of Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal in 1990
- In 1991 INSEC brought out Bhutan's issues by organizing a South Asian Judiciary Mission to Bhutan to study the human rights situation. It published a book entitled 'The Bhutan Tragedy When will It End?'
- Voter's awareness during the first general election of 1992, contribution in the formation of National Election Observation Committee (NEOC)
- Observation of the national and international elections, worked as international observers in the elections held in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, East Timor, Thailand, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Early years (1992-1995)
- Study on the ex-kamaiyas ( a study of kamaiya system in western Nepal , lobbying to free the kamaiyas
- Minimum wage campaign - successfully implemented in more than 80 VDCs. Campaigned for assurance of land rights and fixing minimum wage labour.
- Government's announcement of liberation of the Kamaiyas and fixation of minimum wages to the disguised bonded labour
- Human rights education - Literacy/Awareness Classes to the under-privileged communities
- Establishment of human rights organizations at the district level
- Minimization from the caste-based discrimination of people
Take-off years (1996-2000)
- National Women’s Conference on the them “Essence of Democracy, Women’s Participation in Politics”, which adopted the Pasang Lhamu Pledge, Kathmandu, 1996
- National Human Rights Conference, which adopted the Kathmandu Declaration in 1997
- Integration of Development programmes into the Human rights Movement in 1997
- 1997 – Research on Haliya System jointly with Anti Slavery International, a book entitled “Forced to Plough” was published
- 1998- On the occasion of 50th year of the declaration of UDHR and 10th year of INSEC establishment, INSEC initiated dialogue on UDHR in 13 different national languages. In this process INSEC translated UNDHR in local languages and held intensive interactive discussions with different ethnic/linguistic communities in the country.
- 1999 – Revisit to Kamaiya issue-Campaigned for liberation of Kamaiyas (bonded labour), fixation of their minimum wage. Government announced their liberation in 2000 July and fixed minimum wage (in 2000 January)
- 2000 – Contributed in the formation of National Human Rights Commission
Mature years (2001-2005)
- 2001 – National Conference of Elected Women
- 2001 – INSEC hosted Asia-Pacific Conference on Racial Discrimination
- 2001 – Monitoring and HR promotional activities during the State of Emergency
- 2001- National Coalition on International Criminal Court formed with INSEC as the coordinator
- 2002 - Monitoring of the HR treaties
- 2003 – Collection of People's Agenda for Sustainable peace
- 2003- Formation of Human Rights Treaty Monitoring Coordination Committee (HRTMCC), A national coalition of around 45 Human Rights NGOs, for monitoring the fulfillment of state Human Rights obligations. INSEC is secretariat of the coalition since its formation.
- Submission of shadow report to UN committees on CERD, CAT and ICESCR by HRTMCC, led by INSEC, respectively in2004, 2005 and 2007
- 2003 July - Intervention on peace building initiatives started. Collection of people’s agenda was carried out.
- 2004- First pilot project on peace and development implemented in Bardiya and Surkhet districts. The mitigation efforts for internal armed conflict were started.
- 2004 – Launching of INSEConline
- 2004-2005– National Campaign on Measles Vaccination jointly with UNICEF
- 2004 – Human Rights Leadership Development Programme introduced in 10 districts
- 2005 - Lobbying for passing Agenda Item 19 in the 61st Session of UN Commission on Human Rights, as a result OHCHR field office in Nepal was established
Present (2006-2009)
- 2006-Effective protection and monitoring of Human Rights during the popular movement or the Jana Andolan in April 2006
- 2006 October-Organization of Asian regional conference on peace in Nepal, in collaboration with Fredskorpset Norway, Kathmandu
- Campaign for ratification of Rome Statue of the ICC (since 2001, INSEC has been holding the secretariat of the NCICC)
- Three-months intensive Training on HR Leadership Development for District-Level HR Activists in January 2007 (The HR School)
- National Workshop on State Restructuring in June 2007
- Documentation and Management Training for Secretariats of Major Political Parties in July 2007
- Training on Fundamentals of Human Rights (HR Study Session), management of party secretariats for mid-level cadres of major political parties in August 2007
- 24 district level HR defenders produced and actively mobilized
- Sharing of HR expertise at South Asian Regional level
- Training-cum-Workshop on Constituent Assembly for the Journalists of 25 FM Radios of Nepal
- Monitoring of Human Rights situation during the Constituent Assembly Election April 2008. Nationwide monitoring during pre-election, on the election day and post election
- Observation of the CA election as the leading members of National Election Monitoring Alliance (NEMA) and National Election Observation Committee (NEOC)
