29th “Prakash Human Rights Award” to Social Activist Rukaiya Khatun

The Prakash Human Rights Award for this year will be presented to Rukaiya Khatun, a dedicated campaigner for a society free from exploitation and discrimination, based in Kapilwastu, Taulihwa. Khatun has been actively involved in advocating for human rights and social justice for over two decaRukaiya Khatundes.

The decision to confer the 29th Prakash Human Rights Award on Rukaiya Khatun was made during a meeting of the INSEC Working Committee held on July 25, 2023. The selection committee, composed of five members and chaired by the organization’s advisor and Founding Chairperson Sushil Pyakurel, recommended Khatun for this prestigious award.

This award is named in memory of INSEC founder general secretary Prakash Kafle, who tragically lost his life in a Thai Air accident at Ghopte Bhir in Nuwakot on July 31, 1992. The accident claimed the lives of 114 people, including prominent figures such as academic Martin Hofften, a leader in the Nepali Democratic Movement, and Ang Dorje Sherpa, the publisher of the then Rajdhani Weekly, alongside a group of human rights activists and crew members.

In honor of Prakash Kafle’s contributions to Nepal’s human rights and social justice movements, INSEC established the Prakash Human Rights Award. This award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to rights-oriented awareness in Nepal’s political, educational, health, and social sectors.

Previous recipients of the Prakash Human Rights Award include senior journalist Binaykumar Kasaju, senior social worker Dayavir Singh Kansakar, Dr. Gaurishankar Lal Das, Dalit activist Ramrati Devi Ram, women’s rights activist Basanti Devi Jha, senior journalist Narayan Sharma, and 28 others.

A ceremony to honor Mr. Khatun will be held in Kathmandu on July 29, 2029, in the presence of Honorable Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki. The awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 along with a certificate. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Khatun and wish him continued success in his efforts to build a society free from exploitation and discrimination.
